Bathroom Ventilation
Fans
Advertisements
Bathroom ventilation fans shouldn't be
vented indoors. You must Vent the air to the outside of
your home to prevent mold or mildew from condensation. New
homes are more airtight and energy efficient than homes built
many years ago. There are fewer drafts in an airtight home,
which lowers gas and electricity costs. However, pollutants
retained in airtight buildings can be hazardous to occupants
and jeopardize structural integrity. Proper mechanical
ventilation design can address poor indoor air quality, while
retaining energy efficiency.
For simplified installation, you have a choice of
using bathroom wall exhaust fans or otherwise exhaust fans
for bathroom windows. You can also buy them for the ceiling,
but you will need a cavity above the ceiling to run ventilation
pipes.
To calculate the size of the bathroom ventilation fan is to
calculate the cubic feet of your bathroom (length x width x
height), divide by 60 (the number of minutes in an hour) and
finally multiply the result by 8 (the number of recommended air
changes per hour).
Typically the exhaust points should be located over or near
a shower or bath. With windows closed, exhausted air will be
replaced by makeup air from adjacent rooms. There needs to be a
gap under the bathroom door so that external air can flow into
the room. It is recommended that bathroom ventilation fans be
left on for 20 minutes after use of the bathroom. A timer is a
good solution, allowing the bath exhaust fans to turn off
automatically at the proper time.

For steam showers it is best to have a separate fan in the
steam room that can be turned on after use. Alternatively,
ventilation may also be provided on a continuous basis at other
rates. Ductless bathroom
venitlation fans and bathroom exhaust fans will
provide you with a healthier living environment and can
increase the value of your home. If you wish to research
further on these fans, you can also search for venting bathroom
exhaust fans.
